Act 1, Scene 1: House of Haman
(Zeresh bothers Haman while he’s eating; she holds a baby)
Zeresh: I cook for you, and you never say thank you.
Zeresh: You do not even notice what I'm doing for you.
(Haman continues to eat and does not notice)
Zeresh: Robot!!! I'm talking to you.
Haman: How many times have I told you, my name is Haman, huh?
(He shouts words in Amalekit and Zerash does not understand anything)
Zeresh: I don’t speak Amalekite, only Persian.
Haman: In my house you will speak Amalekite. (Pause) One day you'll see pictures of me on the streets of Shushan and then you’ll say: This is my husband!
Zerash: And do not forget I helped you in the barbershop when the drummer came to get his haircut.
Haman: (bursts out to her) This story is not about you, this story is about me: "Rise to the greatness of Haman" (Pause). The whole world knows who Haman is, and all the rest will be erased!
(Haman takes another sip of soup and makes a lot of noise while he slurps the soup)
Haman: Ahm ... I have a job interview today at the palace ... A new king arrived in the city.
Zeresh: When you go out, can you take the baby?
Haman: When did you get a new one? (Continues to eat)
Zeresh: You don’t want to know his name?
(Haman nods but does not really care; he stops eating)
Haman: It tastes terrible; when will she learn how to prepare food for me?
(Haman gets up from the table and without realizing it he pulls the tablecloth and everything on the table falls to the floor, but Haman does not notice and leaves the stage.) Zeresh washes dishes when the baby is in her hand and does not see everything that happened.
